I think the tablets themselves are the McGuffin, or at least the quest to find them is. It moves the plot, but doesn’t actually serve any purpose in the plot, perhaps. At least, to us it doesn’t seem to- for now. Scott might change that perception as he writes on.

You know, one of the other players in my gaming group gained the ability of “danger sense” for a character a few years back (similar to Spiderman’s “spider sense”). Invariably, when in a dungeon crawl, the direction in which he sensed the most danger was the direction we ended up going. Ever since it’s turned into a long-standing joke with us: “Danger ahead! Let’s go that way!”
