Tennessee has a per capita increase of 800% on trees compared to San Diego :-) Alas, the sunny beaches on SD which help to compensate for said lack of real trees are far, far away from Tennesee. I think the closest beach is in the Carolinas somewhere… good luck!

As for the story, Alex could have taken a page out of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer… Lure the Kraken out, drop rocks on its head, then pull out its teeth. At the end of the story the Kraken can hang up the underwater Christmas tree star for the mer-people. :)
