Perhaps they just happened to be at the same place at the same time. Nico may have been looking for the sword, knowing that it was going to be an artifact of some importance to him. He finally found it when it reappeared in Dreamland, its cavern showing up for the person who was meant to take it – Alex. Nico got there first, and was attempting to get the sword when Alex got there and picked it up first. Nico, thinking Alex would be easily persuadable because he was a child, called the sword evil in an attempt to take it from him. The rest, as they say, is history.

Of course, I haven’t read anything past this point, so I don’t know if that’s the truth.
