She may have seen them when they were far enough that the angle permitted viewing from the middle of the boat, then she steered closer, which would then account for the view in the last panel.

I wouldn’t be surprised if, now that the angle would no longer permit her seeing them, that she either lets go of the wheel, or tips the boat sideways, to be able to see them again. Either one would make sure that more hilarity woule ensue (for us, that is…)
