I really like the first panel. With the combination of the light and the underwater environment, it comes across more as drawn than 3D, compared to what we’re used to. The faces especially. Anyone else notice this, or just me? Still great, though.

“Slices like butter” is a figure of speech. The point is that Alex uses the sword to cut through a masonry wall. Masonry has much more resistance to slicing than any fishy things.

Alex holds on to the blade while cutting though the wall. So, if the wall slice worked because Alex had lots of momentum then he also must have very powerful forearms and wrists to catch the fall. With enough power you can split a fish with an unsharpened quarter inch rolled steel plate. Take, for example, whales hitting boat propellers. Propellers win. When boat propellers hit rocks in shallow areas the rocks win.

If the blade was slicing through the wall without resistance then Alex could still slow down by twisting the blade so that the flat side drags. Similar to the way you can break with a paddle in a canoe.

Nastajia’s expression is EPIC in the 1st panel because of the way it contrasts with Alex’s. Even once he springs into action, his face is all miss piggy screaming. I’m sure she’s calmly loading her next arrow with the same “really? This is all the dungeon master sends me?” expression on her face.
