I just realized I thought through the process backward when I made my post. It’s understandable, since T.H. White writes Merlyn as aging backward. He was born at some unstated point in the future, and lives backward from that point.

Anyway, I haven’t read much about Arthur or Merlyn. Pretty much everything I’ve read is by T.H. White. Ah, why do I have to draw out my explanations so much?

I read The Sword in the Stone, and that’s it.

Perhaps he was careful in what he said at all times, in case the wraiths were listening (which, in that instance, unfortunately they were), so as not to alert them that there were already other ways for adult humans to enter Dreamland.
