Well, I'm not in your shoes, so the short answer would be. 'Anything but Windows or Android'. That said, free Unix clones MTGradwell has already mentioned definitely 'suck less' as a network access platform.

Currently, all of my network connected machines run Debian. Suits me fine, but as a former Unix sysadmin, I may overestimate its user friendliness. (All right, my wife is using it, too, no problem. But I'm doing all system administration for her. If you've got no Unix expert around, and don't want to increase your own expertise, you may well end up high and dry, because even though MS DOS was a poor man's Unix of sorts, it missed the underlying philosophy cheerfully, blissfully, and completely. And then, things went worse.)

So, the long answer is, 'Define your needs. Poke around. Set up a virtual machine and play with the things you find. No one can tell what's good for you, neither the Previously Owned Fruit Company, nor Mr. Ballmer, nor even the mighty Google itself.' There's been a whole lot of things going on around while the big corporations held end users' attention. Do your own research, and jump onto the train you like best. 'There's room for many a-more!' :)

Great reference to Boorman's Excalibur, still the only decent Arthurian movie (or television) out there.
Excalibur was also Boorman's favourite film too. Every film by John Boorman has a reference to Excalibur in it too. Although what you may not know is that some Excalibur props were left over from his Lord of the Rings pre-production.

I'm also a big fan of Mønti Pythøn ik den Hølie Gräilen

Probably right, but the longer Dreamland Chronicles can hang in there, the more exposure it gets... And it truly deserves every bit of exposure the interwebs is willing to give! ^.^

Wouldn't it be awesome if Dreamland won round 2, then ALSO won round 3?

Not sure how this is gonna play out. The talking sword is supposed to belong to the King of Dreamland and record all of his experiences there. So therefore that sword is only in dreamland. Excalibur was in the waking world, and apparently can pass between worlds through the magic water. Ok, cool...but now which brother is King, and will they have to fight for it?
