there were two different swords in Arthurian legend also. Excalibur was bestowed to him by the Lady of the Lake… the sword drawn from the stone was a different sword. I forget what it was called. But Mallory screwed up and called them both Excalibur, hence the confusion.

So, Daniel has the sword bestowed to Arthur by Nivienne, and Alex has the sword won by Arthur from the stone. Aha.
