I took your advice and re-adjusted the light in the lamp.
How’s it look?
Much better. 🙂 Sucks we have to wait another day for Dan’s response.
The lightning is much better. 🙂
Perhaps tone down the intensity of light on their faces in panel 1 and 2. Doesn’t have to be too much, but it does seem a bit harsher than it should.
The lamp is excellent. 🙂
I have an odd feeling that even if Dan said yes it wouldn’t work
it would be interesting to find out… i mean the only reason Alex was able to go (as an adult) is because he is the twin of the true king (Dan).
Wait, how is Dan the true king of Dreamland if Alex is the one who pulled the sword from the stone when he was a kid?
But if Dan did take the necklace and somehow managed to get into Dreamland, would the sword know that Dan was the true king, or just think of him as an imposter?
Dan is the eldest son in the line of kings so he was next in line. However, he could not enter Dreamland because Arthur was still technically king. Alex drew the sword and has been judged worthy by the sword so he is the actual king now. In theory Dan would have been able to claim the sword as a child, if Arthur had moved on earlier, and become the king. He didn’t while he was young and I don’t think he will be able to now that he is an adult even with Alex’s permission.
Kaden is right. As the eldest brother, Dan is the true king of Dreamland. I think he will be able to use the sword to get there and I am very interested to see what he will do when he DOES get there. His approach is bound to be very different to Alex’s…
Hit ‘post’ too early. Sorry!
Anyways – a king is only a true king once he’s been crowned such. Thus, it’s perfectly possible that either brother might end up with the crown at this point.
Fortunately for Alex, I don’t think he’ll have any competition for the real prize – Nastajia’s heart. I don’t think she’s that fickle 🙂
If Dan did take the necklace, doubtless the sword would wriggle out of his hand, stab him in the heart, then softly intone “Problem solved.”
Alex is the true king, because he drew the sword.
Dan could not enter dreamland as child, because he was the heir, and Arthur lived.
I *think* Dan is still heir (because Alex, the King, has no children?), so still can’t dream into Dreamland (even disregarding his being adult).
BUT… we just don’t know how the sword works in this situation.
The sword has its own agenda, which may or may not coincide with what Alex or Dan might want for either themselves or Dreamland. We have no idea what lengths it may go to if thwarted – nor whether or not it would accept the touch of the heir as well as the true king.
Don’t forget the elven armour Alex was given, which was supposed to be given to the bearer of the sword, regardless of whether he is the true king or not. That rather implies some doubt in the minds of the armour’s makers as to whether the sword might not use others to forward its agenda.
I can’t see the sword hurting either Alex or Dan as long as they continue to act in its interests, but I’m not sure a declaration of intent to leave the throne to Nico would be very well received…
Honestly, though, I’m thinking an assassination run has a better chance of success, here. Though I’m not sure Nico himself is not being manipulated by the powers of the Nightmare Realm, who played on his fears very well to get the line of human kings out of the way… What is THEIR interest in this, I wonder?
DON’T DO IT!
DO WHAT??!! O_O
AND Arthur passed away, so the spell keeping dan out is no more…
Though it would be funny if another such spell was cast on Dan… i mean bad… that would be bad..
There never was a spell cast on Dan. That rule about Arthur’s existence keeping Dan from going to Dreamland was a basic rule of how Dreamland works. While there is a king, no potential kings can go to Dreamland in order to prevent any squabbles for the throne. Or at least that’s what I gathered.
Am I wrong? Because I keep seeing people referring to the spell on Dan still.
You are correct there was never a spell on Dan. Unfortunately Alex isn’t to quick and asked repeatedly about the spell on his brother. So some people might have missed the swords full explanation. See pages 1137-1139 for the best explanation.
Hmm now that you guys bring this up, I’m worried. Would Alex’s kingship (http://www.thedreamlandchronicles.com/the-dreamland-chronicles/chapter-15/page-1042/) create problems for Dan, the first born, to enter dreamland? Or do you only affect the next generation (http://www.thedreamlandchronicles.com/the-dreamland-chronicles/chapter-15/page-1044/)??
I know the spell wasnt cast on Dan, but the spell, whoever it was cast upon, was keeping dan out. And it is no more.
Sorry I was responding more to Julie than to you. It might have been better to say there was never a spell. It was a law, some basic function of the connection between Earth and Dreamland. While it is probably best described as magic it won’t go away just because someone dies.
Nicodemus could try to find another way to trap the human with the sword, be it Dan or Alex, and that would keep other potential first born heirs out. However, how would you go about trapping someone with a sword that can cut through almost anything?
About time they tested out that necklace.
Hmm… is he holding it by the sword? Cause I definitely don’t see it dangling from the bottom.
Huh…funny…I didn’t notice that the first time, but you’re right. You can’t see the sword on the necklace.
Yes. It’s by the sword.
Thanks, I’ve worried about that point.
No pun intended? LOL
I’m sure you’ll have your edge soon enough.
I just realized that the lamp has all these pictures on it. What are they?
The light is looking better, but it should cover the whole of the base of the lamp, instead of having two shafts coming out at either side, a bit like the way the light comes out of the top.
well, what do you expect from crappy dorm-room lighting!! 🙂
BTW Scott, the guys need a poster of Sidney Crosby in their room!!! (and I won’t be surprised if Brendan has already suggested it… 🙂 )
I think Sidney was in high school when I started this story…ha ha.
But I’ll see what I can do.
LOL!! Yeah, but the first pages were posted during his rookie year! 😀
man it would be so cool if Dan got to be a king of dreamland after he yerned to go there for so long, but I admit I worry about what it would do to alex’s quest to be a better man if he got to unload all those responibilities like that….But darnit dan’d make a good king! ; p Maybe dan can be king and Alex can focus on Nastajia–but can only one of them currently with the sword get in to dreamland? Normally no adults can go at all, right? ; . ;
When Arthur became trapped between the worlds, he was working on a way to bring other adult humans in.
I think Dan will be sorely tempted but will resist, and get angry with Alex for tempting him.
Well… there was that other amulet Arthur and them were originally trying to create. I can see that being completed with Dan and Nicole helping from one side, and Orion helping from the other. Science taking the place of Merlin’s magic.
Then both Alex and Dan might both be able to be in dreamland at the same time. Perhaps even Nicole could visit with Felicity again too. Fun to imagine the possibilities.
That’s true, I hadn’t considered the amulet resurfacing, though it seems quite natural for it to do so. I guess we shall see! : D
AHHH the suspense! Hmm… all these years that Dan has wanted to go to Dreamland… =\
I’m expecting a “no” from Dan, but…I’ll be darned if this still isn’t a cliffhanger!
There’s just that tiny bit of a ya know… missing sword on the end of the necklace. Anyone else notice that?
Scott replied above…Alex is holding the necklace by the sword. 🙂
this page looks much better now. the different angles make it look more interesting. 🙂
And meanwhile the sword is like, “OMGZOMG, must rat Alex out to Nastajia now!” .
… okay, not really. But I’m surprised Alex will admit it right in front of the necklace considering he ditched it for the earlier part of the conversation.
Then again, he’s Alex. XD
Noooooo~!!! Not another trademark Scott cliffhanger :O!
Cheer up! At least it’s not a Friday Cliffhanger!
Personally, I still think Scott does it on purpose but chose to be nice JUST this once! 🙂
Reminds me of the Lord of the Rings, when Frodo tries giving the ring to Gandalf. Only, the sword doesn’t corrupt people close to it… hopefully.
Annnnnd the march towards becoming a responsible king begins. Dan’s response should include an elbow drop to Alex’s head. XD
The lamp shadow looks much better now! Realistic enough that any little remaining oddness could be explained away by some element of the structure of the lamp that we can’t see behind the lampshade.
Without proffering any predictions, I look forward to what Dan decides, and the consequences that result. Great storytelling, Scott!
Oh, and new month, people; don’t forget to go VOTE! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
unfortunately, as much as i would love to see Dan in Dreamland, i’m thinking the rule that kept him out is still in place since the sword has acknowledged Alex as the king.
indeed. Won’t work.
But definetly Dan should try it, to get the possibility our of the way. And then he should concentrate on searching the amulet…
Wait. I think we’re wrong about Dreamland politics here. If there was a spell keeping out potential kings all the time, then there’d be a power struggle every time a king died. The next king would have to come to Dreamland and grow up a little before he could take over.
i would guess that whoever the current king is would say who gets the sword necklace when they die, so he chooses his own successor.
As long as the king died on earth the necklace would be passed onto their heir. It would allow an adult to enter Dreamland and take rule immediately with all their training to rule on Earth already in place. Even if the heir was young the sword would symbolize their right to rule and the leaders of the Dreamland races could act as advisors.
Lamplight is much better, though the lampshade itself looks very flat, not round at all…
Light look quite good I’d say.
‘Bit cowardice imho that Alexander tries to burden Dan with what was ,clearly, a destination meant for Alex…Orrr..does Alex actually wants Dan to experience dreamland for once out of the goodness of his heart? [pondering] And, would would dan’s ladyfriend fit in here somehow?? Wise King/Wise Queen??????
Well, I’ll just admit it, I miss Nicole…. 😛
Awwww…I miss you, too, Jurgen S! 😉
Well..ehhh.heh..[scratching head ,somewhat embarassed..]
I do like how the page is laid out. The last frame is a BIG frame because this is a BIG question with possibly BIG consequences. The layout emphasizes this.
MUCH better lighting !!
Oh yeah… IS it possible? O.O
