I think that it is just the fact that his younger (albeit, barely) brother was risking his life throughout the night, do Dan probably stayed awake all night in order to watch over him, but now he is nodding off because he sacrificed the time he normally would have slept.

Yes, you’re right the (audience’s) left side of the book is longer. Didn’t notice until you pointed it out. I went back to see Dan’s expressions since Alex woke up. It looks to me like Dan is half asleep on the train. Notice the eyes are almost closed in all frames except for the last one when Nicole grabs his book.

Speaking of the book, I’ve noticed something the past couple of days. It looks like one side of the book is longer than the other. The cover and pages in Dan’s right hand extend further from the binding (out of frame) then the cover and pages in his right. See panel 3, where the side on Dan’s right extends well past the stripe in his shirt, while the cover on his left barely gets there.

Yeah, I know; I’m picking nits, but it’s driving me nuts.
