Yes, Nastajia is handing Alex an arrow.
They’re going to use them as a light source.
I don’t remember her first encounter with the krakken … I’ve been reading this since day one .. and can’t remember.
Curse my failing memory!!!
It happened back in chapter 7. http://www.thedreamlandchronicles.com/the-dreamland-chronicles/chapter-07/page-428/
Wow, looking at the old page and the new, there is a drastic difference in Nastaj then and now. I much prefer the new version.
Okay… so they have arrows for light… that must mean that they’ll use torches for weapons. 😛
And somewhere, Frankenstein’s monster shuddered.
As far as I know, that was only in the movies… although it’s been over 10 years since I’ve read the book.
As did the Morlocks.
Ok, is it just me or does Alex have a total “deer in the headlights” look in panel 3. I feel like he needs a thought bubble that reads “Oooh. Pretty, Glowy, Arrow!”
On a more serious note: I believe its his pupils they are set a smidge to high in his eyes… of course I am no artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I am aware of your attention for detail Scott and this is one of the first times… EVER that something distracted me, so that makes it noteworthy in my book. Just an opinion take it for what its worth! You Rock!
It’s not just you. I definitely think Alex’s eyes have that kind of sleepy look that I associate with people who are drugged or mesmerized. Add to that the fact that he’s reaching for the arrow, and it looks like the pretty lights are enchanting him. 😛
Rather reminds me of the scene from the deep ocean in Finding Nemo:
“I feel…happy…and that’s a big deal…for me…”
“I want to touch it.”
Well…he is reaching out to touch the “shiney”… and the close focus explains the slight crosseye look. Has he seen the bow in the dark before?
Little known fact.
Alex’s eyes don’t blink.
I’ve been dealing with this for 7 years now.
The closest I have is a “sad” eye expression.
Unfortunately…it also raises up the lower part of his eyes…giving him this look.
Her “energy” bow is even more useful that the Archer’s “energy” bow from the old D&D cartoon.
Considering that’s where I stole it from…I had to add to the “coolness factor”.
Heh, at first I thought Alex was just going “SHINY. MUST. TOUCH. SHINY.” in the third panel. Then your comment (and likely the next page) corrected me, so he won’t get bonked in the head to break the powerful trance the shiny might have put him in.
Love the dialogue in that last panel, Staj’ at her best, kind of like the prim and proper opposite of Lady Death, if there is such a thing! 😛
Observation/critique: I don’t know if you were going for a more relaxed eye in the final panel, but it seems to me like her words would have a certain amount of intensity, and her eyes don’t match that at all. It makes the last bit seem more like casual smugness than the fervent words of a headstrong and determined princess/queen in search of her lost family.
Otherwise, love the page as usual…especially Alex’s face (see my comment above). 😛
Here’s what happened…
I swapped the 3rd and 4th panel because I couldn’t fit the word bubble into the last panel as she was handing Alex the arrow.
Nastajia was originally smiling in the close up because she was thanking Proteus for the love and concern.
I painted the smile off…but her eyes still have that bit of smile in them.
The pains of daily pages…you make quick changes to keep on your schedule.
I will see if I can redo her face at a later point. Either that…or re-swap the panels if I can find a better place for the dialog.
actually i really like her face this way. She’s not angry or vengeful here, her face is just “this IS going to happen”. It’s past angry and moved right on to a zen like point where feelings don’t matter because she IS going to find out about her parents. Kind of chilling that way.
Ditto!! I read it more as a willful determined sparkle in her eyes.
Also, wonderful lighting… I love it!!
… and the bubbles….!
Pitching in another agreement. Her expression is completely sincere, without anger or hatred, while delivering words that are normally said with anger or hatred. Overall, I find it more effective this way.
I can agree that there is a bonus to her not being angry or sad…but determined and intense do not necessarily mean angry or sad. It’s just a less relaxed look. *shrugs* My two cents…and now that I know why her eyes look that way, I feel a little proud of myself for even noticing. I’m usually the last person to catch details like that.
Hm. It worked okay for me…I was more impressed by the shadows her eyelashes threw. But I can see where a bit more determination would be nice.
Still another foreshadowing that Nicodemus may not be dead…
You know, I didn’t even notice Alex reaching for the arrow until I read the comments. My initial take was that she was holding / waving the arrow in King Proteus’ face, which seemed really odd / out of character. Weird.
BTW, when will we be contacted about our Book 5 Kickstarter orders. I seem to recall something a while back about them being sent out, but haven’t seen any email about where to send them.
Book Five is supposed to be here any day.
We were told last week to look for it.
It would be nice if Proteus could at least offer some kind of escort, some kind of guide. While the area may be a dangerous one, there’s always some risk takers who willingly go into places like that. Granted, they don’t always come out….
You mean like Dastan?
Admit it, it was a risk for a guy to kiss a guy (especially after being punched by him). You never know what you’ll get in return (or just for the attempt).
Well…I’m sure Horatio has told everyone of his adventures last time they were in Naroobi.
Probably best to go it alone.
Oh, I bet Horatio would LOVE to come along! And stick with them a little longer this time… 😉
woe? should it be not woe? mmm….i think “shall not yield” would be better.
Hopefully that Kracken they took on and apparently killed wasn’t the small version… or was it?
Kraken are known to live in packs of at least 13.
