I don’t think we’ve seen any blond, beardless mermen before. Especially with a slight tan. Or it may be some mystical sense merpeople have for their own kind. It is also possible it’s his clothing; I can’t really see a merperson wearing armor normally. You add all that up, and it’s clear he’s not a merman; and since the ears rule out Elf, that leaves pretty much an adult human. As incredible as that might seem to any Dreamlander who’s not old enough to remember back to Arthur…

If they were made of the thin cloth they appear to be, it’s hard to imagine them maintaining that perfect cone shape. Instead, I would think they would drape, or maybe wave about in the water.
