That movie got me into the whole King Arthur thing.
Apparently we’ve made it into ROUND TWO of this bracket thing.
If you’d like…please give us a vote.
We’re the bottom bracket and we’re number 27.
First time to be first!
First – to thank everyone for helping Dreamland Chronicles get thru the first round of the single-elimination web comic tournament at ComicMix!
First – to ask that you go vote for Dreamland Chronicles in round 2!!
Dreamland is currently a bit behind in the votes, so let’s push it on thru round 2 people!
Thanks and good luck Scott!
Too bad I don’t think we’ll win against Looking for Group in the third round…..
Probably right, but the longer Dreamland Chronicles can hang in there, the more exposure it gets… And it truly deserves every bit of exposure the interwebs is willing to give! ^.^
Wouldn’t it be awesome if Dreamland won round 2, then ALSO won round 3?
Clearly not Alex’s Sword… What power does this one wield?
OH hai thar Excalibur!!
and this is exactly how it should be scott just like in the tales and shows!
I am making an assumption…but I believe that is Excalibur Mom is going to freak. :D.
Caledfwlch. for those in Wales.:)
I adore the Welsh name for the sword. Closely etymologically related to the Irish sword Caladbolg, too.
And yeah, this looks nothing like Alex’s Sword. I always assumed that Alex’s Sword of Kings was supposed to be Excalibur, but now I’m thinking the Sword of Kings is more like the Sword in the Stone vs Excalibur/Caliburn/Caledfwlch/Caladbolg.
epic sword rise, eh?
Thats one cool thing. Me’s so thrilled now how that gonna work out. Almost getting my pants in a twist. ^^
Oh yes! Very nice! I don’t know why I didn’t see that one coming!
Nice to see the Excalibur scene, too. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed that movie.
Thank you for the great story. This has been wonderful.
The sword in the stone and Excalibur were two different swords… So Alex has the sword in the stone, and Dan has Excalibur?
If they were kids they would totally duel. Now… Oh now they just might do it!
But Alex’s sword is a five inch necklace in the waking worl– No, wait, he’d probably duel anyway.
as of 1:10 am pst, the votes are TDC-399, other comic-463….so need alot of votes http://www.comicmix.com/news/2012/03/19/mix-march-madness-2012-webcomics-tournament-round-2-vote-now/
i wonder if this sword will let Dan finally travel to dreamland. once he gets it, it should make him the ‘true king’, thus replacing King Arthur. according to legend, the lady of the lake was holding it till the next true King came to collect it.
That has to be a callback to Alex describing exactly that to Niviene a while back when they first found her. I think she might have been amused by it. 😀
The more I think about it, the more I think you may be right… It’s just too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence.
Sure, she may have happened to have Arthur’s old sword (which is different than Dreamland’s sword of kings, as that one becomes a necklace pendant when one is awake), and may have held on to it all that time. But the method of delivery, the “true king of Dreamland” bit (which bothered me, earlier), may have all been a setup, all for Dan. After all, he’s the one who started researching the Lady of the Lake, and convinced Alex to look for her in Dreamland. Still, I don’t see it as a prank, or anything, but a good-natured play for one who, until now, had little to go on but his brother’s word (and a vanishing necklace) to believe in the actuality of Dreamland.
Daniel, the one true King… of America! Now we can forget about all this election nonsense.
Daniel 2012 — Living the dream!
Am I the only one worried about what happens to Alex being able to enter dreamland after Dan grabs that sword? The lady of the lake may have been eluding to the dreamland/real world relationships as foreshadowing. If so. I r sad now. 🙁
This is your daily TWC update, sibs.
Good news: 7,724 votes have brought The Dreamland Chronicles to the FIFTH place.
Bad news: it’s gonna be a rough ride from here on. Until now, we only needed a few per cent more votes to move up. To beat the current #4, we’ll need TWICE as many votes. Tough. Can we do it? I’m positive that we can.
So VOTE! I’m not asking you to because it is simple. I’m asking you to because it is *very* simple.
A word of warning to those who still use MS Windows to browse the Internet (In 2012 A. D.? Stone cutlery anyone?): yesterday, some readers reported malware sightings on the TWC site. Keep your antiviral tools updated and ready. And for the sake of all that’s holy, consider using some naturally networthy OS instead.
What would you suggest? I’m certainly not going to give money to the fruit dictatorship 😉
I’d suggest a free OS such as Linux or FreeBSD. Ubuntu is probably the best of the current Linux distributions in terms of ease of use and amount of available software. Install a few window managers (KDE, Gnome, LXDE …) so you can try them all and find out which one you like best, and so you have something to fall back on if your favourite one hits a snag.
Windows is still OK provided you have a good antivirus, but Linux is a good way of revitalising old machines that don’t have the horsepower to run the latest Windows effectively.
Well, I’m not in your shoes, so the short answer would be. ‘Anything but Windows or Android’. That said, free Unix clones MTGradwell has already mentioned definitely ‘suck less’ as a network access platform.
Currently, all of my network connected machines run Debian. Suits me fine, but as a former Unix sysadmin, I may overestimate its user friendliness. (All right, my wife is using it, too, no problem. But I’m doing all system administration for her. If you’ve got no Unix expert around, and don’t want to increase your own expertise, you may well end up high and dry, because even though MS DOS was a poor man’s Unix of sorts, it missed the underlying philosophy cheerfully, blissfully, and completely. And then, things went worse.)
So, the long answer is, ‘Define your needs. Poke around. Set up a virtual machine and play with the things you find. No one can tell what’s good for you, neither the Previously Owned Fruit Company, nor Mr. Ballmer, nor even the mighty Google itself.’ There’s been a whole lot of things going on around while the big corporations held end users’ attention. Do your own research, and jump onto the train you like best. ‘There’s room for many a-more!’ 🙂
K. No one uses an operating system to browse the internet. It’s like asking if you use a can of paint to paint a wall. You use a paint brush. I think you might have meant Internet Explorer. So, nah, I use my Android’s browser and Firefox. XD
Now then, the comic. Freaking awesome! I think I’m going to quote Freud here in that, as sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, sometimes a sword is just a sword.
He may have meant that the exploits and Malware were targeted at Windows machines; Regardless of browser, no updates means infection.
64-bit OS has an easier time evading those things, and if you use a better browser than IE…OS really has nothing to do with it.
Oh, puh-lease! If there’s anything I’ve learnt through being an IT guy for 25 years, it is, ‘If your Windows system has been in contact with any media for any period of time, consider it compromised and treat it as such.’ And Internet is one R rated lot of a medium.
I’m going to have to wade in on this one. MOST of the time, malicious code is picked up off the internet via java exploitation. Third party browsers like Chrome and Firefox seem to be better at protecting you than IE, BUT… Windows OS is java enabled, so… any malicious code can slip through and get ya. This is one of the reasons for the development of Windows 8, an operations system that will NOT be java enabled. Also, Google’s OS will be free of java and Google is also working on the next version of Chrome which will severely restrict java and filter anything delivered via that platform. Other OS’s like Linux are safer to use as the malicious code written into the malware isn’t designed to attack those operating systems. If you choose to use Windows, as I do, then the best defense is a good antivirus backed up by a good anti-malware software. Both of these can be had for free and there are good ones out there. For antivirus, I recommend Security Essentials from Microsoft. It can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/securityessentials and Malwarebytes is an excellent anti-malware tool. The free version you have to run yourself and can be found at http://www.malwarebytes.com … Good luck and happy computing.
As always, Scott, excellent webcomic and wonderful work. Keep the story going!
Ah! The classic.
It never gets old, that Arthurian thing.
Buuuuut… Are there then 2 swords? “the Sword Of Dreams” and “Excalibur” ? Must be. Most intrigueing…
LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!
Ok, maybe not applicable.
Get out there and vote people! At least it won’t make gas prices any worse.
Scott, really liking your homage page!!! Anyone in Dreamland have a camera?
Though my favorite scene of the Lady of the Lake presenting Excalibur goes to the movie Merlin.
Today’s comic gave me chills. pure win. I’ll have to purchase the whole book at some point for my kids.
That sword looks NOTHING like Alex’s!
It IS some watery bint flingin’ swords about!
HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAA!!!! EPIC!
Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government! … Sorry …
BAHAHAHAHA…”if I tried to become emperor because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!”
You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Scott, you had to have known the Monty Python references would be out en masse at this!
I was counting on it.
HOLY COW!! Dan will be gobsmacked! His jaw will be on the ground! He’ll be overwhelmed, speechless, and paralyzed with emotion! And that’s just the beginning!
Wow that’s lovely artwork, though.
Nice nod to Excalibur, one my favorite Arthurain tales.
Things just got interesting. Will Dan be able to enter Dreamland now? That would be cool, but complex as well.
My favorite, too. 🙂 Excalibur was what got me into medieval stuffs as a kid (my parents made me leave the room for the two sex scenes since I was watching it at the tender age of 11 :P).
Love this page!
I think Dan’s mom is not going to be very understanding about how he got the sword.
She’ll likely lock it in the shed for 12 years! 🙂
Excalibur, exactly what I thought when I saw this page. And then I saw the video …
Now all we have to do, is to play the music “o fortuna” by Carmina Burana.
O.o Did not expect that! Coooooooooool… 8)
That is beautiful. That last pannel is just stunning. AWESOME.
Hey all! I just got back into reading Dreamland after I stopped back on my first deployment in 08. I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed catching back up on the series, though I am saddened that the forum (btfw) is no longer.
Keep up the good work, Scott! And i look forward to seeing this series progress even more!
in a word… YES!!!!
as of 12:31 pm EST Dreamland was ahead in the second round!!!
IIRC, Mary Steward managed to get Excalibur (called Caliburn) to be the sword in the stone, and a Roman gladius, weilded once by Emperor Maximus, all at the same time.
Which she did by bending the rules of the story. But then again, she included Bedwyr (rather than Romanticised Bedivere) and even gave him attributes that Lancelot has in the Vulgate – aspects that Lancelot stole from Bedivere once he appeared on the scene (in the Welsh and early English stories, Arthwyr, Bedwyr, and Cai were the trio of adventuring heroes and the founding brothers of Arthwyr’s Companions). I love what Mary Steward did in her four books on Arthur and Merlin, but like all adaptations, it’s an adaptation. And you have to decide which adaptations and versions of the Arthurian Cycles to draw upon if you’re writing your own.
I’m keenly interested in what Scott will do next here for -his- adaptation.
For some reason I didn’t predict this, and love it all the more as a result. Plus… this page looks AMAZING. I know, I say that a lot, but I love the colours and composition, and that sword actually looks VERY similar to a real one I bought my middle brother years ago (the hilt was different but the blade treatment IDENTICAL).
You just keep outdoing yourself Scott, long may you continue to do so. ^_^
dam, i thought alex’s sword was Excalibur, then what is alex’s sword? and why didn’t arthur have this sword in dreamland?
I only hope she doesn’t give Dan that sword like she brings it out of the water, because if Dan takes it, he’ll cut himself! You NEVER give a knife or sword blade to someone first–unless it’s to do battle, of course… 🙂
Ho boy, I tell ya…this gave me the chills! Nice job.
And my inner mythology nut goes SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Render is taking SOOOOO LOOONG!
Should be done by morning.
SOrry for the delay.
No worries, Scott. Welcome to the machine. Just keep it cool. They are saying 85F here tomorrow followed by thunderstorms. Yay. 😛
All I can ask is when you get time can we PLEASE have that last panel as wallpaper? It would look epic on my iphone and ipad!
Agreed. I if I had things like money, I would so buy it as a poster. It’s one of my favorite panels ever.
Not sure how this is gonna play out. The talking sword is supposed to belong to the King of Dreamland and record all of his experiences there. So therefore that sword is only in dreamland. Excalibur was in the waking world, and apparently can pass between worlds through the magic water. Ok, cool…but now which brother is King, and will they have to fight for it?
Great reference to Boorman’s Excalibur, still the only decent Arthurian movie (or television) out there.
Excalibur was also Boorman’s favourite film too. Every film by John Boorman has a reference to Excalibur in it too. Although what you may not know is that some Excalibur props were left over from his Lord of the Rings pre-production.
I’m also a big fan of Mønti Pythøn ik den Hølie Gräilen
If it were me, I would get the sword authenticated and then sell it on eBay or something. That thing is valuable! Who cares how magical it is?!
“Well, not in El Paso, it ain’t. In El Paso I got me $250 for it.”
AWESOME PAGE!!! nuff said…
I am reminded of the old game Spirit of Excalibur.
An accurate lady of the lake impersonation
