then how did Niviene discover the pool the first time I wonder? Does she emanate magic naturally and naturally opens all portals she passes by?
Which reminds me, how did people discover all kinds of stuff like that if you beat cream or egg whites long enough they’ll stiffen up? I can’t imagine any sane person beating cream for 1/2h manually w/out knowing that something useful will come out of it….
Eggshells store water very well. There was a time when plastic, metal, and ceramics (pottery) did not yet exist.
Niviene is having trouble holding the portal open. She spent a lot of time looking through the pool before she learned how to open the portal. She met Merlin before the first time whe opened it.
There are scientists that go to work and study a specialized food technique, and do experiments with making food such as baking stuff, grilling, frying, steaming, and they all do experiments on ingredients to make the food they want it was discovered by a curious accident but that’s how people find out.
Wow, I had actually managed to forget the horrors of watching Steve Austin and the Six Million Dollar Man. Now, it all comes crashing back. I wonder how many years of therapy this is going to cost me…
Good page, and it further reinforces the “how exactly did she move that sword across??” issue.
However, in panel 3, she’s already submerged to her eyeballs. In panel 4, her shoulders are still above the water. Unless she’s bobbing up and down, one of those needs to be fixed
You’re right. That should be fixed. But I don’t think we need to see Nicole’s legs as she isn’t actually going through the portal and the angle is not really good enough for a reflection (well, with the lighting as it is at least).
Remember that the portal is only one-way. Nicole’s legs are still in the pond on Earth.
As to the other differences, I have two theories: Either panel 4 chronologically occurs during panel 2 and was put at the end to maintain scene continuity, or there is some distance between Dreamland and Earth occupied by the portal itself.
That was pretty much exactly what I was thinking, the same kind of effect as talking to someone on a mobile phone whilst they’re standing with their phone just a few feet away, the transference of signal delays their voice (as it normally does) but because of the proximity you can actually see it, pretty weird effect but it totally makes sense technically.
Or, just a thought, maybe Nicole’s outburst caused Niviene to rise above the water again. Someone starts flipping out and people do react. Especially if they’re raising their voices.
Regarding dialogue: Niviene, who has come across in the last few pages as somebody far more caring and nice than alot of your readers anticipated, comes off as very callous and cold here. If that is what you were going for GREAT! If not, I think you were aiming for “I’m tired and getting weak, this much magic is draining me, etc.” That doesnt come across quite as clearly. She does not need to be apologetic, but I think she should offer some sympaty for having to make their visit so short. IMHO, of course!!
Take this for what it is… an opinion.
I think the problem is not that she appears angry, but that the phrase “quite honestly” is 21st century speak, and before all her wording has been slightly archaic.
In block 4, should we not see Nicole’s legs in the water? Also, there seems to be a face next to Alex, but it does not seem like it should be the princess’ as her hair is turned the wrong way for that.
Poor Nicole and Felicity, so close and still so far.
Scott, thank you.
Thank you so much for this comic, for updating so regularly, for just being so awesome.
i’m pretty much brain dead at the moment, and really needed this, just to relax.
News from TWC. After dropping down to #9, The Dreamland Chronicles made its way to #7 with 1,386 votes. We can do better than that. We did it last month. #6 has 1,645. Vote, fellow Dreamies! The Dreamland Chronicles ain’t no bunch of politicos. There’ll be no shame.

Think about the man who decided to eat something that came out of a chicken’s bum.
He probably saw some other animal eating them (like a fox) and decided to give it a try. Considering how useful eggs are, I’m thankful.

Meh…she strained the magic of the pool by moving Excalibur from one world to the next…and strained herself. That’s how I read it.

I’m recalling a comedy bit on him by Eddie Izzard…
“The Six Million Dollar Man,
he was a bit slow really.
He had amazing powers.
“OK, Steve, you’ve got to get those
bad guys over there.”
“I’m right on it, Oscar.”
(Six Million Dollar Man theme sung)
“Little bit faster, if you could, Steve.
They’re going to get away.”
You’re watching on telly.
“Oh, I’ll get a coffee. This is taking forever.”"

Oops. Second part was for another post. That was for elderac. Sorry

See part of my reply to Jay. Accidently put your reply in that post. But the head is nastajia.

I see the grass. Is it morning already?

I find the headless Niviene in panel 4 quite disturbing. I don’t think it’s the best pose to go for.
The headless look isn’t bothering me…but her left hand is! Those look like waaaay creepy long fingers.
Nivienne is coming back to one seriously angry kitty! Good luck to her!
Meh, she used all her spell points.
Steve Austin, astronaut. A man barely alive. We can rebuild him. We have the technology.
