It was initially attached. After it got bashed off its moorings by Nic, she got knocked unconscious.
Or at least that is my explanation.
There wasn’t much about that particular scene that made sense to me.

I just thought of something. If Kiwi can lift Alex away like that…why couldn’t she fly away with that cage in Nicodemus’s castle? Was it locked down? Enchanted, or some such? Surely it couldn’t have weighed more than Alex.
