Wifi follows the same basic rules as most merchandise. For example, if there’s not price tag on it, it’s free. Also, if it isn’t nailed down, it’s free. And if you can pry it up, it’s not nailed down.

But seriously Scott, the efforts you went through to get this page up while in LA show a level of dedication to this project for for which I commend you. Well done.

My own 2bits: Next time you’re off to con, look up some of your FB fans ahead of time – I’m sure that they’d be happy to guide you to the nearest free wifi spot and maybe even buy you a coffee. I know I would.

I agree; I had to post a picture on a website about 5 months back, and I couldn’t post it on my computer at home because it’s dial-up, and the fastest it’s been going on has been about 20k. I had the idea of putting it on a thumb drive and using the USB port, and bingo! it worked. Now if only wi-fi were more prevelant and you didn’t need a password for it

Check out the libraries, man! Most if not all that I’ve visited – across the country – have at least high-speed web at the computers in the facility – for public use, I might add – and many also have Wi-Fi for their members. If you KNOW that you will return to that city on numerous future occasions, most charge less than $5 to become a card-carrying member.

I might also add, in a lot of the small towns that I’ve visited, the library was the most fascinating and nicest building in town.

If you can fit what you need to send out on a thumbdrive, most computers in the libraries come equipped with USB ports, and if you tell the librarians what you are trying to do, they will bend over backwards to help you get it done – if it is within their responsibilities. And if it is not, they may forward you to the person with those responsibilities.

Try picking up an aircard from Verizon. They’re $60 per month…but you get the ‘net anywhere there’s cell phone reception.

Hospitals. Major Hospitals usually have wifi for free, you just have to agree to their TOS.
