Happy Monday all of you.
We’re still in Florida hopefully having a great time at the beach (I wouldn’t know…I’m writing this from Nashville last Thursday).
Enjoy the page. See you guys when I return on Thursday.
What kind of resistance will the fairies put up against Nick?
…I’m pretty sure hands -do not- bend that way.
TheDragonGirl, I’m pretty sure they do, as I can put my hands in that position pretty easily.
I’m with Dragon Girl on this one. I don’t care if your wrists CAN bend that way, that isn’t normal. Makes mine hurt just looking at it.
You probably can’t see it, but Kiwi’s palms are out, with the backs of her hands on her hips.
What I mean to say is that is an anatomically possible position.
Next frame prediction:
Paddington: Well it wasn’t always that way…
(launch mini story about less than passive past for rock giants)
also, what’s with her emotions? (bleach avatar!!).
You really need to make a 3d movie. you said you may be able to on your FAQ, so why not? I guess it’s really a matter of time, is it? this movie could be goddamn awesome, who wouldn’t watch it?
Well I just read very single comic. This is one of my favorite webcomics now. It intrigued me at first then slowly grew ahold of me. By the last chapter, I was officially hooked. The writing and character development improved drastically. It’s moved from being too child-like and cliché to more comfortable (and somewhat more original) territory.
I’ve been reading the blog posts too. Best of luck to you and I can’t wait to keep reading this comic to its conclusion.
to those who think kiwis hands look oddly placed: I put my hands in that position occasionally.. and do not find it uncomfortable or awkward at all, its just a looser form of fists on hips
It’s good rock giants are pacifists. It’s Dreamland, not Warhammer. 😀
I’ve got to say, I love the whole idea with the Rock Giants being gentle herbivores. I’ve been wondering what they eat since I first saw adult Paddington and this just makes so much sense. It also fits in so well with his personality. Really good job with this one, Scott.
Her hands do look wrong. It is a possible position – but an awkward one to do – usually when people do that position = the hands are in a fist so the first joint of the fingers and knuckles is what is resting on the hips. The fist can either be open or closed. I do think her wings look lovely.
Glad you are feeling better – hope your recovery continues
Heh, she’s just spoiling for a fight, isn’t she?
I can understand why they are pacifists… and I’m sure Kiwi will be told that tomorrow. She’s a bit… hot under the collar, isn’t she?
Great Page, Scott!
Keep having fun! Enjoy a much deserved vacation!
If Kiwi can uppercut a guard down on the ground, I imagine Nick will at least feel her punch…and most likely counter with being smashed into the nearest wall.
About the hands: 1. Kiwi is a woman, and women tend to have greater flexibility. I can (as a male) put my hands nearly in that position. 2. Kiwi is a fairy. Who of us humans is in a position to say what the fey anatomy can or cannot accomplish, especially when close to the similar human position? I have no problem with her hands.
But, on to greater issues: more and more I am thinking that Paddington is telling his people’s pacifism accurately, but he himself may not fully agree with it. I think he (at least) is ready for a bit more muscular resistance.
I did that with my hands/arms a couple times. Sure, I can do it, but it’s bloody uncomfortable.
I am not sure why Kiwi looks angry ALL THE TIME. It’s kinda of strange, her being a pixie and everything
I agree with many people here – those hands look a bit “off”…
Normally, the hands would be placed on the hips either in a fist – or with the fingers over the waistline.
Dragon Girl, yes, hands do bend that way, the problem is that most people don’t, because it’s not a natural position for the pose.
Interesting how often people of intense personal power are pacifists. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ghandi. All it takes is some oppression, and the sense of pacifism comes out.
With regard to Kiwi’s hands I agree it’s not a comfortable position – but it is possible.
My perception of it is as a specific body language pose that says the person doing it is outraged about something. They’re putting their hands like that because they’re ‘saying’ with that pose “I’m trying to keep from slapping someone” or [substitute the phrase of your choice].
It’s so Kiwi.
It says something about the company she keeps – she has to exaggerate all of her gestures, etc. because of her size relative to who she’s usually talking to. Just raising an eyebrow or frowning slightly would likely be missed by her larger friends – especially if she was bobbing around in flight.
By the same token, Paddington has had to learn to restrain his own movements, if smaller people around him are to be at ease. It makes him seem passive – but he’s not, really. One of the things dancing does for him is to let him move freely.
Now here’s a question for Scott. Am I just projecting my own conceptualization of Kiwi and Paddington onto this, is it something you deliberately aimed for when you were developing them as characters, or did it just happen that way because it somehow felt ‘right’ to you?
I wonder how much of it comes out of the way you pose them in 3D. The models impose their own limits on what you can do with them – but getting a pose the way you want it has to be easier in some ways than drawing and redrawing it would be. You can keep tweaking.
I admit I like this interlude because it gives Kiwi and Paddington some time at center stage so we can come to appreciate more about them. It also fills out Dreamland more – there’s an ecology, an economy, and of course politics implied by what the two of them have just been discussing.
Plus now we know rock giants fart. 😉
It’s touches like this that make the story so entertaining.
Oh, and one more thing. You think Kiwi has her hands in an awkward position? I’m trying to type this over the big gray cat who has insisted on parking across my lap while he purrs…..
@xaxnar. “.. rock giants fart”? I looked back a number of pages. I think the “riiip” is a tree being pulled from the ground.
@Lloyd. We’ve never met, but I like you already. Lloyd (too).
Yeah, that was Scott having fun with a sound effect that proved to be a little ambiguous in its location. My bad. 😉
There is a certain air of class that I find refreshing, sir. I can’t quite put my finger upon the why of it, but you have an ineffable je ne sais quoi about you.
Lloyd or Lloyd (too) one of you guys should change your name on here to Harry. Not to insinuate you are dumb or anything….I’ll shut up now.
Ofcourse Kiwi’s hand are bent weird, she is a faerie, they can do magical things like that ^__^
That’s the position I use automatically, and I find it much more comfortable and natural than using my fists. When I put my *fists* on my hips, it feels strained in my shoulders and along the outside of my wrists and forearms, but resting the backs of my hands on my hips allows my shoulders to relax without strain or pain. In other words: YMMV. What is comfortable for some is not comfortable for all.
Ahhh, but Felicity, that’s the best reason for the rock giants to be pacifists…”With great power, comes great responsibility.” ^_~
I am larger than normal (for a human) myself, and I can totally identify with Paddington and the other rock giants. I’ve believed for some time that people who are overly large and strong generally follow one of two paths: either they learn a lot of restraint and patience (to the point of pacifism in someone the size of an average rock giant) to avoid damaging things and people around them; or they become dangerous and violent, and often fall to whatever justice system holds jurisdiction over them, because they are such large and obvious targets.
As for Kiwi’s hands, I occasionally use that gesture myself. I find that, after an hour or four at the keyboard, that makes for an effective stretch to ease the strain on my wrists.
