And that ends Chapter 3!
Tracy is still updating Chapter 4 twice a week on Patreon (if you’d like to see how that’s coming along) and I’ll post that here when she’s finished.
Thank you all for reading along!

Thanks again Tracy and Scott! :>
Our pleasure. Thank you for reading along!
This was an amazing shot in the CG version of the comic and Tracy did it justice in hand-drawn.
I agree completely. This page really showcases the strengths of both versions. The lighting effects in the original really made the 3-d landscape pop. Tracy’s version really excelled in some of the details, like the waterfalls and the mist over the trees. Both are gorgeous.

“Ashendel” = ashen dell, the burned-out valley
Really going with that for an elf town name? Hokeydokey.
I also gotta say that as someone who’s been lucid dreaming for as long as I can remember, it’s really weird and funny how people who use it in fiction tend to tie it up with all sorts of completely unrelated concepts that really don’t relate to the real experience. The best way I can describe it is, you’re on a boat floating down a river, following the current, just watching whatever happens by (the random craziness the dream is throwing at you), but if you decide you really need/want to, you can sit up and grab the paddles and work a little bit to redirect into a different direction. Mostly you’re just feeling too lazy to bother, and whatever random dreamstuff happens is fine.
Nightmares, for me, tend to go one of two ways: either I get annoyed and take control of the dream and flip the script to hunt the monster (too much time spent figuring out boss monster patterns in video games, it’s a reflex), or there’s just too much / too scary going on, I can’t get into a mode where I’m deciding what to have happen – constantly wavering on the edge of being asleep, basically. At which point, I take this cheap stainless steel shortsword I got at a con once, lay it down on the bed next to me with my hand on the hilt, and go straight to sleep, no problems, no tension, no dreams.
I call it Dreamslayer. Hey, it works.
Maybe Ashendel means something completely different in Ancient Elvish, like “Giant Tree”. π
As for lucid dreaming, I’ve done my share, and talked to a few others that have as well. Experiences differ, but the critical points are: (1) you know it’s a dream without waking up, and (2) you can exercise some level of control over the dream (regardless of whether you choose to or not).
Did you know that you can break your dreams? If you overexert yourself taking too much control of your dreams too often, your mind can rebel (to protect itself) and stop you from being able to lucid dream, or even remember your dreams. Happened to me in high school, and I went several years without remembering any dreams. Now, more than 30 years later, I can sometimes lucid dream, but not like I used to, and I still struggle to remember my dreams. Of course, I’m getting older and struggle to remember lots of things these days …

Or an Ashen Dell, could simply be a valley filled with ASH trees – quite common here in the UK
