Flying takes confidence and belief; otherwise, Alex could still do it. Being caught by the horrible, evil bad guy would destroy that.

Dreamlanders can fly by proxy when humans are flying with them.

Humans can not fly in the presences of flying ships feels consistent to me but I am not sure why.

Actually, I have to side with Slartibartfast42 on this one. If it's so easy to fly, then they should be able to fly anytime. But then they would not have the plot to rescue the kids from the pirates. As he said, that's a plot hole. Anyway, the pirate attack did happen in Dreamland, not the Nightmare realm. So the Dreamland laws (where it's easy to fly) should apply.

Slartibartfast42 – pirates from the Nightmare Realm were attacking. People don’t have nice flying dreams during nightmares – they have scary dreams about falling.

If he could fly then why did he call for help when the pirate was holding him over the edge of the ship? He should have just said “Go ahead and do it.” Plot holes!
