I believe the relationship between Dan and Nicole has just rounded a turning point. They are now leaving the hostility portion (gradually, of course), and moving toward the mutual respect portion. The romantic portion will be around the next bend …
Dan should have repeated what Nicole said in the page before last (or so): “You’re not the only one who does research around here.”
