sure they can, just only at very close range.
You can use a crossbow underwater and at close range it can easily cut a fish in half.

Wouldn’t she just kinda float slowly downward rather than falling swift enough for Alex to need to catch her? Maybe I’m just being nitpicky…
That’s what I was thinking. But… that wouldn’t be as dramatic as Alex catching her in his arms!
Not if the Kracka threw her.
Natural response to pain is to contract, rather than to release.
The arrow hit the back of the hand. A contraction in the back would be consistent with opening the grip.
I don’t think there is much “natural” about this kraken.
Besides, maybe it thought she bit it or something. I know when I have something in my hand and it causes me pain my instinct is to fling it away.
Bullets can be fired underwater if they’re subsonic rounds. Supersonic rounds just fragment when they leave the barrel. And even subsonic rounds tend to hit turbulence much quicker in denser fluid.

The kraken had a purple voice bubble with green letters in the cave — changed here. (Oops!)
