Considering that the “shiny suit” protected him from a dragon and a kraken, I’d say that Alex’s faith in it is rather well justified.

Considering what I’ve seen of exchangeable pirate hand prostheses, he probably takes the sword attachment off when doing things that don’t involve hostility.
Pirate: “Think some shiny suit’s gonna protect you?” Alex: “Yes.” Pirate: “…I dunno mateys, he’s got us there.”
That pirate in the top left is definitely Vinnie Jones. Please look him up, it’s worth it for the laugh.
