He is using bad/predictable attacks, throws himself off balance, and exposes his back. Kraaken's shell/hide would have stopped a normal steel blade given that the force pushing on it was just Alex's tail. If you were hungry and a raspberry "attacked" you odds are you would let it fall in your lap rather than dodge. Except that Alex really does not know how to handle the sword.
